Car Care Resolutions for 2016

“This year will be different”... We know. It’s the same every year and it never works out.

But just remember, taking a few minutes out of your time to do some simple checks over your car will not only make you a safe driver in 2016, but could save you a lot of money.

We’ve put together 5 (really simple!) habits you should look to adopt to keep you and your family safe in 2016.

1 - Schedule bi-annual check ups.

Regular servicing and maintenance will boost your car’s performance and fuel efficiency. Also remember that our trained technicians have the skills to spot potential problems early - allowing you to nip them in the bud before they become dangerous or expensive. Afterall, prevention is always better (and cheaper) than cure. Either book your check ups now, or write a reminder for yourself 6 months from now so you don’t forget.

2 - Check you engine fluids every month

Including oil, coolant, brake, clutch, automatic transmission and power steering. Also check the filter and exhaust at this interval, looking out for any obvious damage. Taking 10 minutes to conduct these simple checks between services will be really beneficial for the health of you car. Again, set a reminder in your phone or diary at monthly intervals from now so you don’t forget nearer the time.

3 - Check your tyres once per month

Taking a few minutes to scan over your tyres, check the tread and look out for obvious rips or bulges. If your tyres have worn unevenly or your wheels are unbalanced, vibration can cause excess stress on suspension components. Excess stress means extra trips to the mechanic and a hefty bill. Checking your tyre pressure will also improve safety and boost fuel mileage. Check out this blog from Bognor Tyres for more information and what you should be looking out for.

4 - Resolve to regularly clean your car (inside and out!)

Excess dirt and grime can act like sandpaper, creating unnecessary abrasion that can wear down upholstery and carpeting. Regular cleaning will allow you to spot internal problems before they grow worse. Taking care of your car’s appearance can also protect its resale value later down the line.

5 - Accept that car problems won’t “just go away”!

It’s very easy to ignore that strange sound or warning light in the hope it will disappear after a while. Even with all the technology we do have, a self-healing car has not yet been developed. As soon as you notice something suspicious, bring it into a mechanic - it may not be as bad as you think to fix immediately, but leaving it could make it worse.

Which resolutions will you be keeping next year?
